We are very excited to introduce you to another member of the Grey Havens Group Board. Joe has become invaluable to our organization, even though many of you might not know his name. He is the one who almost magically appears before and after many of our events, solving technical problems (with a sonic screwdriver?) and doing whatever else needs to be done. Once, he and his family even enchanted a ceiling to look like the Great Hall at Hogwarts! We are privileged to welcome Joe Ashworth to the Grey Havens Group board.
Here is more about Joe in his own words:
My Name is Joe Ashworth. I am 52, married, and my wife and I have four children. Three of the children are currently members of Grey Havens YA, the fourth has begun his journey into adulthood living on his own.
I enjoy all things Sci-Fi and all things computers. I was a very avid reader in my youth; raised on the works of Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Arthur C Clarke, Douglas Adams, Larry Niven, Anne McCaffrey, Frank Herbert, Piers Anthony, and of course Tolkien. It wasn’t until I read the Immortal Series by Piers Anthony that I able to reengage with the more fantasy side of fiction. Prior to that, it was Tolkien that kept my interest at a very young age.
SciFi is enjoyable when it reasonable. Can’t really get into ‘Lavaracnoids’ or the ‘Sharknado’ series but I understand their cult following. If you enjoy it, stick with it!
I began my formal working career as a Paramedic and Flight Paramedic. I enjoyed the patient interaction and the teaching opportunities that came with this career. I spent my summers Life Guarding and providing emergency medical response services at a major water park. I spent my spring and fall time teaching of a local community college. Twenty-six years ago I changed careers and went into Air Traffic Control. After initial training in Oklahoma City I was stationed in Jacksonville Florida for six years before transferring to Longmont Colorado. I continue to work as an Air Traffic Controller assigned as a Quality Control Staff Support Specialist locally here in Longmont at Denver Center.
I have worked with the Boy Scouts of America since 1998 and currently I am the co-advancement chair of Longmont Troop 65 and a Brotherhood member of the Boy Scout’s Order of the Arrow. I am also the assistant leader of Longmont Girl Scout Troop 115. I have been working with the girl scouts for about seven years now.
I am a senior member with a National Civil Air Patrol squadron where I perform radar analysis for missing aircraft. I also volunteer with the local Vance Brand Civil Air Patrol squadron where one of my daughters is a member. I am currently working as their Emergency Services Officer.
In my spare time, I enjoy working with computers, computer programming, and tinkering with computer related technologies. I still enjoy picking up a SciFi book from time to time.
I have watched my children in Grey Haven’s YA since it was formed. They are great readers and it was fantastic to see them excited about the different fandoms. The Grey Havens YA is a good match for them as it pulls them into being creative, social, analytical, and of course encourages more reading! Not just reading but discussing and understanding what they are reading. I have since seen this is true with the adults in Grey Havens as well as the splinter groups!
I absolutely love the passion and joy each of these members exhibit when they go to their meetings or diving into a project and I see this with all the volunteers as well! I am honored being given the opportunity to nurture this collectively as a Board Member.
